Arbor Week in South Africa is an annual national environmental event. It runs from 1 September to 7 September every year and is part of Arbor Month in September.

Purpose and focus
National Arbor Week is organised by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (formerly DAFF) to promote tree planting and sustainable environmental management. The campaign emphasises planting indigenous trees, greening communities, and raising awareness about the ecological, cultural and social value of trees.

Typical activities

  • Public, government, schools, businesses and organisations participate in a variety of activities, such as:
  • Community tree‑planting initiatives and greening projects.
  • Educational programmes about the importance of indigenous trees.
  • Environmental workshops and awareness campaigns.
  • Volunteer efforts to improve urban and rural vegetation.

Themes and heritage
Arbor Week coincides with South Africa’s Heritage Month. During the week, champion trees (significant, historic or culturally important specimens) are highlighted to underscore environmental stewardship and heritage conservation.

Participation
Individuals and organisations are encouraged to take part by planting indigenous trees, joining community events, and engaging in education and conservation efforts within their local areas.
